My new and unfinished short story.

2034

Chapter 1: The Rendezvous

She slipped into an alleyway, quiet as a mouse. It was midnight and Taurus, her brother, would be waiting for her at the docks. Again, she adjusted her backpack, willing the straps to stay sewed on the backpack. If it did fall, she’d have to leave it, there was no time left, and she was already late. She thought of her brother; shiny golden hair with perfectly straight teeth and blue eyes to top his handsome complexion, she was so lucky to have her brother! She walked faster, knowing that her Hydrophius dragon was hovering high above her, protecting her. She was nearing the end of the alley, noting that an open space stretched before her, it was dead still. She sprinted into the open, knowing that there were traps set for people like her. She wasn’t the “average person,” though; she was trained on Jadeblade, her home island, safely hidden away from the government. She calmly side-stepped a mine and jumped a hidden noose that you were meant to step into and end up hanging upside down. She giggled at the thought of someone just hanging there, swinging around and around. Endlessly dodging and weaving, she made it to the shortcut alley that lead to the dock.
“Taurus?” She whispered his name, nervous.
“Libra?” Came the answer, then she felt his arms embrace her into a tight hug.
“Are the others here?” She asked.
“Yes, they are about halfway out,” He replied, climbing into a small boat.
“Your partner is here, right?” She asked him. He smiled,
“Yes, Leo is watching.” Partner was code for whatever animal you were given at the age of ten to know and love. Taurus pushed the little dinghy away from the dock as soon as Libra climbed in after him, wondering if they were safe for the time being. Taurus knew something was watching them besides Leo and Aquai, he tried to shake the feeling, but it remained.

Gemni felt the link between Taurus and Libra grow stronger.
“Capricorn! They are coming, hurry to the rendezvous!” It will be easier to meet on land, she thought.  “I’m trying, Gemni! It’s not like I have water powers! It’d be nice if Libra’s dragon HELPED!” He glared at the water, willing the sail to catch a breeze.
“Aquai is probably helping Libra. And its partner, remember?” She reasoned.
“Yeah, yeah.” He sighed, “I wish we were not being chased.”
“You know that isn't the case, Capricorn.” She scolded, “They are capturing our KIND for their stupid experiments, with our partners.”
“Soon our island will have to be quarantined from the rest of the world.” He sighed, “We will be the ones to get supplies and stuff since we actually paid attention to our training.” There was a stifling silence for a long time before Capricorn broke it.
“You should probably get some rest, Gemni.” He pulled the rope connected to the sail, catching a breeze. The sail slapped fiercely in the wind as Gemni cuddled down into the front of the boat, pulling a nearby blanket to her chin. It was cold tonight. Gemni connected with Taurus and Libra who was not far off, Libra was worried and Taurus felt someone was watching them. She allowed her hand to dig into her dress pocket, feeling the rock; she remembered what the elders said to them before they left the tribe:

“Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, and Gemni. Your group is strong and so, because if that, we want you to take these.” A young girl walked up to the four siblings and dropped a rock in each one's outstretched hand; each one matched their favorite colors. “Use them in a time of need, and use them wisely. Goodbye, our daughters and sons.” Then a young man nodded to the elders, they nodded back. He walked up to the siblings and touched each head, transporting them out of the realm and into a safe house. Two days later, the safe haven was raided. That was the last every one of their group saw their childhood home. Oh, how she missed it! They had a long trip ahead of them; she drifted into a light sleep, dreaming of Jadeblade, her childhood home.
